Just saw this course posted online. I wish I was in NY so I could go. Ineraction design for RIAs.
Some problems you will be able to solve when done with this class:
1. You will work on the redesign of a mission-critical financial services application to be rolled out to 6,000 financial consultants. The previous system was deployed as a desktop installed application using .NET services. You are tasked with redesigning it to work within a web browser. What is the right set of technologies to consider? What are the differences? How do I and should I replicate the behaviors of the desktop application in this new medium? What pitfalls should I be aware of when working on my design?
2. You are hired to design a hotel reservation system for the latest brand hotel to come from a major hospitality organization famous for top tier service. What advantages are there in using RIA behaviors and technologies to help enhance this new brand? What can go wrong to cause a backlash effect?
David Malouf is the instructor and is a very skilled interaction who’s well respected in the community and an active member of IXDA list. Hey David want to make a trip to Vancouver to put this course on here too? The weather is nice in summer:)
There is a hole in the current knowledge and practice of user interface development, even though most Ajax developers confront UI development on a daily basis. Although design patterns have been around for a while, little attention has been paid to the HTML Document Object Model (DOM). This presentation uses several concrete examples to explore the need for and application of DOM design patterns.
This presentation shows why DOM patterns are consequential, given the complex and often misunderstood interplay between the DOM, DOM events, and JavaScriptâ„¢ technology–particularly event ordering, bubbling and capture, and event triggers.
In this presentation, attendees will learn how to use the JavaScript programming language to write succinct, useful libraries that address key DOM design patterns such as composite controls. They will leave with an understanding of how DOM design patterns can help speed web development and result in more-robust solutions. They will also learn about various repeatable patterns that can be applied to DOM scripting, specifically how DOM events and JavaScript technology work together.
Mark your calendars for Monday, May 5th at 11am. CommunityOne is free and you also get the first day of JavaOne for free so you’ve got no excuses!
That same day we’re going to be hanging out and participating in the RedMonk unconference track. Our areas of focus are going to be the business of RIAs and some advanced topics in Ajax development.
The RedMonk Unconference: expect a rich mix of open source, dynamic languages, development in general, Java, social media high jinks, and all of the usual things you’d expect from the industry’s first open source analyst company. This year we plan a Rich Internet Panel (with JavaFX, Adobe, Nitobi, and other folks) and a discussion about the Mylyn Eclipse personal productivity IDE, with a special appearance by Atlassian’s Mike Cannon Brooks. This is the CommunityOne unconference by you, for you, so please come along and set the agenda.
Dion and I were (again) the two Ajax-tag-alongs on the OnAIR Tour in Europe. So we had a quick chat about what Nitobi has been up to with our Ajax components.
The first leg of the European OnAIR Tour has just wrapped up in London. It’s been a great time. I’m just putting together all my thoughts on the tour but I’d post this video of my talk in Spain.
Yup it’s almost that time again, starting March 31st in Madrid I’ll be joining the Adobe crew to spread the good word about AIR. Registration is already strong but let your friends know, and remember the events are all free!
So, which city / country is leading the charge in registrations? Here are the cities from leg 1 ranked in order of registration numbers:
1. London
2. Paris
3. Amsterdam
4. Madrid
5. Brussels
Whenever we think of Dashboard Apps, we usually think of things that show visualization of data on a Web Application. How many tracks were downloaded, how many hits, how many people have visited the site, etc, etc. However, this is really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to dashboards and visualization. There are many more apps that need good centralized mangement and visualization, and a web management application can be exactly what you need. Currently most of these apps were done in the 90s and don’t work very well. Nobody really talks about how I can connect my toaster to the web, except for hobbyists, but I think that it’s going to happen again.
FreeTheNet is a really cool project to provide free Wifi in Vancouver, Nitobi, but more specifically Joe is a big supporter of this project.
The Adobe on AIR Tour is Headed to Europe And I’m on board to talk up Ajax development in AIR, our Dreamweaver Extensions and some usability topics.
Here’s the schedule:
* Madrid - March 31
* Paris - April 2
* Amsterdam - April 4
* Brussels - April 7
* London - April 9
* Dublin - April 11
* Stockholm - June 2
* Berlin - June 4
* Warsaw - June 6
* Prague - June 9
* Munich - June 11
* Milan - June 13
Please let me if you’re in any of these cities and would me to buy you a beer;-) Also would love to get some recommendations of stuff to do an check out.

Sounds interesting. Some of the best talks on usability I’ve been have been from experts working directly for business or product as opposed to outside consultants (not trash talking, ’cause I’m one of em). I’m also very interested in usability and ux in the banking world since so many Nitobi customers are large financial institutions. Banks also have to deal with other issues like large data sets, privacy, security and accessibility more diligently than many businesses so it’s neat to understand how they balance everything. Incidentally many big banks were *very* early adopters of Ajax…before we even had this clever little term:)
The second Nitobi Hack Day is coming up Feb 9th at our office. Doors open at 9am, Hacking Starts at 10am and Judging will be at 6pm. There’s an iPod Nano Video up for the best app. Sign up on upcoming. You can hack on whatever you want Ajax, Rails, Python, AIR…it’s all free game. Lunch will be provided.
